Lately I’ve been thinking about all of the kids I see in the videos my kids watch. Recently my kids have entered the world of seemingly endless online videos of kids doing silly things, and playing silly games. While you may not have been exposed to it personally, it probably won’t shock you to learn that there are seemingly endless amounts of content produced by adults for kids in an attempt to cash in on the marketing dollars that go alongside these videos. Some of these creators have turned into mega brands and have spawned hundreds or thousands of imitators as everyone with a smartphone can create content and post it at almost no cost. And of course, many of these videos feature children.
It also probably won’t shock you to learn that our child labor protections are hopelessly out of date. Illinois recently became the first state to pass a law in the area, but there have been child actor laws on the books for some time as a result of the experience of Jackie Coogan. It’s past time our child labor laws be updated to address this loophole.
